Short facts about me
I am almost 40 years old, originally from the German-Dutch border and currently living in Munich, Germany.
Grown up at 56 ft (17m) AMSL im not naturally a mountaineer. But I started to love it a few years ago. Leaving the near to alpine areas is not negotiable to me anymore. :-)
For work I am into agile software development and search engine optimization (SEO) as a Project Manager. Call it agile PM, Scrum Master or whatever, I am always trying to get away from traditional management and beeing more a servant leader than a Project Manager. 12 years in Bundeswehr, German Army, was really enough for beeing part in a "command & control" structure.
How I got into mountaineering and Via Ferratas?
In the end of my time in the Army I was based in Murnau, a small market town in the Bavarian Alps round about 37 miles (60km) in the south of Munich. We did some marches in the mountains there and I really liked that.
I also had a side job as a trainer in a climbing forest, kind of a high rope course between trees. For further informations you can check here, but unfortunately the website is only available in German yet.
Well, after a while normal hiking or marching got me bored. And the 4 courses of the climbing forest I could do blind. So I needed a new challenge. I rented a harness, a via ferrata shock absorbing system and a helmet from my boss and tried my first via ferratas in my vacations.
I almost did a big mistake and wanted the hard ones from the beginning on. I will tell you later about that in my blog, also as a warning in context of hubris and security. Anyway, I really loved that kind of mountaineering and I bought my own equipment. During the last two years I did 55 via ferratas (including some 2nd ascents).
I also did some mountain trips with short climbing passages, but my experience in other kinds of mountaineering is limited - yet.
Whatever, I will always love the via ferratas and like to keep anybody informed about this awesome form of sport.
